UK HIP HOP
just 15 months ago I would have stated:
"new uk hip hop? goldie lookin'chains you mean? that's about it, innit?"
luckily enuff life is all about learning and thus I did.
find my personal recommendations and some sound bites below.
don't forget, I said "personal" - means very subjective picks
from a much bigger pool of artists, obviously...
freshman in da biz and everybodie's darling right now:
introducing SWAY DASAFO
he runs his own night in london, is nominated for the mobo awards without even being signed and got his very own slot on the prestigious run the road 2 compilation. a very professional 22-years-old newbie that is. SWAY might be the next one getting a call from jay-z but I bet he won't pick up the phone. for just a couple of days now his first single "up your speed" is out on all city on cd + vinyl, get it at JUNO (see sick faves).
here is a lil download of another very fashionable smash hit:
while sway is following fashion, KLASHNEKOFF is following his heart. last year saw the release of his first 6-tracker 'The SAGAS OF KLASHNEKOFF' full of political conscious hip hop/ragga anthems. he's been featured on 'run the road' for the second time as well and is as charismatic as he is petite.
this is one to sing-a-long:
being on the road for quite some time, the NEXTMEN are definitely always up-to-date and one of my favourite producers. they include traditional hip hop, dancehall vibes and even grrrrime into their various releases and just started their own label 'custom records'. get whatever you can by the NEXTMEN, it will always add to your collection.
here's a snippet of a new release - more downloads on their website.
ok. we're leaving the hype/style section for now for some real rural essex talent (where hip hop lives...). meet JIBBARISH and his friends. we don't know what he puts on his cereals every morning or maybe it's in the essex water - whatever it is, something makes him rap fast. and faster. hitting warp speed any sec.
there's not much out on vinyl yet but DROP BOMBZ has a sure place in my record box, always good for when the going gets tough.
snippet here plus a full mp3 of THE CAVALRY. a slow bounce by EVIL ED with an all star team including YUNGUN, RICOCHET & guess who's JIBBARISH, rat-tat-tat.
hot like fire, cold like winter, flow like water...
